At the Kamen Rider 50th Anniversary Project Announcement tonight, it was revealed that a brand new Kamen Rider film was in development with none other than Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno writing and directing the film. Titled Shin Kamen Rider, the Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman, and Evangelion 3.0+1.0 (titled Shin Evangelion in Japan) director said that the film has been in production for the last six years and was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic until March 2023. A teaser trailer and visual have been released for the film.
Hideaki Anno commented on the announcement, saying:
"Fifty years ago, a majority of elementary schoolboys were fascinated by the life-sized hero Kamen Rider.
I was one of them.
I started this project because I wanted to repay, even if only in a small way, the enormous benefits I received from the TV show 50 years ago in the form of a film 50 years later.
In addition, I will do my best to create an entertaining work that can be enjoyed by those who haven't seen the original work.
It has been six years since the project began but due to the coronavirus pandemic, changes were made to the production schedule, and the film was pushed back by two years.
We hope you will be kind enough to wait."
A producer at Toei Productions said that this was the perfect time for the announcement of the film as it was the franchise's 50th anniversary and that Shin Kamen Rider is on schedule for 2023 as there is enough time to film between then and now, so they believe they will meet the March 2023 release month.
